The latest enrolment figures suggest there are at least 200,000 university students living in Brisbane. These students are spread across three large universities located close to the city, as well as several smaller universities in Brisbane’s outer regions. With an ever-increasing number of uni students comes a demand for student-centred accommodation.
Before we get into the different apartments for uni students in Brisbane, here’s a brief rundown of the universities that are drawing them to the city.
Bordering the Brisbane River at St Lucia is the University of Queensland (UQ) which is regarded as one of the country’s most prestigious tertiary institutions.
Less than 10 minutes away from UQ, you’ll also find the Queensland University of Technology, with two inner-city campuses — Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point. QUT’s enrolment figures for undergraduates currently sits around 30,000, making it the largest in the state.
The third and final university near Brisbane’s CBD is Griffith University. There are five campuses in total, with four being close to the city and one being walking distance from the CBD in South Bank.
While the majority of students are renters, it’s certainly not uncommon for students to buy property near their university campus. One and two-bedroom apartments for uni students offer first-home buyers an excellent opportunity to get their foot in the door of the property market. Parents looking for an investment often purchase a property for their child while they are at uni and then rent it out to other students after their own child graduates. For investors, these “student suburbs” are a gem, as demand in the area is guaranteed.
While UQ offers onsite colleges for students to live in, these have a maximum capacity of just over 3,000, which is only 6% of UQ’s total student population (undergrads and postgrads). Add this to the students of all other campuses which have no onsite colleges, and that’s a lot of students looking for somewhere to live.
The immediately surrounding inner-city suburbs are the most popular with students, with many willing to travel up to half an hour on public transport to their campus if it means accommodation is affordable. On the inner-west side, the suburbs of St Lucia, West End, Taringa and Toowong offer leafy suburban streets with a number of cafes and bars all geared towards the student market. The inner-south side including South Bank and East Brisbane is known for its cultural precinct. Heading towards the inner-north side, suburbs like Herston and Bowen Hills are excellent for those who want a short commute into the city and to be close to the health precincts and hospitals. All of these areas have several new and existing apartments for uni students. Check out our list of Brisbane’s best new apartments for uni students available to buy now.
