The Queensland Government has announced the approval of the master-planned urban community West Village in West End. It is estimated to cost $800 million and will replace the existing Absoe building on Mollison Street.

Heritage buildings such as the nearby Peters Ice Cream factory will be preserved, along with some of the remaining buildings near the Absoe facility, which will be converted into retail.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Jackie Trad said that her reassessment was necessary to get the best advice on developing the area.

“We had the opportunity to create a world class urban renewal project for this 2.6ha inner city site and I am confident that based on the expert planning advice I’ve received and by applying conditions to the development we have been able to achieve this outcome.” Ms Trad said.

West Village is predicted to finish construction in 2025, and will be a mixed-use environment of retail, apartments, and park-space.

Park-space and laneways are used to help connect between Mollison, Wilson, Boundary, and Little Jane Street.

The village will also allow for a supermarket, nightclub, residential care facility, hotel, car wash, and childcare centre, along with a public art space.


Artists’ impressions show a similar design to the Southbank Plaza, less than a kilometre away.
