Have your say on Brisbane’s biggest park in 50 years

Tennis courts, outdoors therapy spaces and a wildlife rehabilitation centre are just some of the ideas pitched by Brisbane residents for Victoria Park at Herston.

Plans are underway by Brisbane City Council to transform the existing Victoria Park golf course into a 45-hectare public park.

Works are expected to begin in 2021 and residents have until September 29 to have their say on what they think should be included.

The Brisbane City Council earlier this week released the ideas of five artists to pique public interest in the project:

One vision, called the Brisbane Rock Pools by Place Design Group, includes cascading swimming ponds and water play areas. Bush tucker trails, an amphitheatre, shared exhibition spaces and a boardwalk are some of the other ideas explored in the other artist visions.

People can give feedback on each of the Victoria Park artist visions and fill out a survey on what activities and features they would like to see.

The site’s existing popular putt putt course, driving range and functions centre will all be kept.

Victoria Park will be more than twice the size of the city’s botanic gardens and will be the biggest Brisbane park opened in 50 years. The park has already been likened to New York’s Central Park, offering residents, visitors and workers a green escape within a sprawling metropolis. It if can emulate Central Park, we are sure Brisbane residents and visitors alike will come to love it.

Brisbane City Council has stated on its Victoria Park project page that it has no authority or plans to allow high-density living on the site, which sits adjacent to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and University of Queensland schools of dentistry and public health.

According to council, the land is mainly owned by the State Natural Resources Department and any proposals for commercial use would also be subject to approval by the natural resources minister.

Victoria Park is bordered by the Inner City Bypass and the Inner Northern Busway along Herston Road.
