The new Western Sydney Metro is expected to begin construction in early 2020, with seven stations along the line confirmed last week. Expected to cut the travel time between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD down to roughly 20 minutes once complete, the Western Sydney Metro is part of the massive upgrade that is currently underway for the greater Sydney area. The line will also more than double the existing rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, which is great news in light of the fact that the T1 Western Line and the T9 Northern Line are expected to reach capacity within the next decade.
There are seven new stations that have been confirmed along the future Western Sydney Metro line. The underground line will stop at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Srathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and the Bay Precinct. The NSW Government is still investigating whether stations should be built at Pyrmont and Rydalmere, and the new CBD station location has yet to be determined.
Construction will begin at the Bays Precinct in early 2020, to prepare the site for the major tunnelling works that need to happen.
The greater upgrades to the Metro could eventually include a four-line Metro network, into which over 39 stations could potentially be implemented. 17 of these would be entirely new, as in the case of the Western Sydney Metro line. Now that the North West Metro line has been delivered, and with construction on the new line from Chatswood to Sydenham and Bankstown well underway for its 2024 finish, the NSW Government decided it was time to move forward with the overall plan for the Sydney Metro in order to keep the project within the estimated timeframe — although don’t expect a quick finish, because if all 39 new stations are delivered, construction may not finish for at least another 30 or 40 years.
For buyers considering Sydney — either for investment or for their new home — this is good news. Residents will be able to move around more easily, decreasing the amount of time spent commuting to work, and more than 70,000 jobs created in the Metro upgrades, there will be an increase in the spending and livability of these areas in a spill-on effect.
