Location & Transport
Sitting just 7km from the Canberra CBD, There are several Government offices headquartered in Belconnen. These include the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and the Australian Communication and Media Authority. Belconnen is also home to Canberra Stadium and the Australian Institute of Sport. As a result of this residents who live in Belconnen may be able to work close by, instead of having to travel to the city.
In terms of public transport in Belconnen, there is a large bus interchange across the road from the Westfield Shopping Centre. In the future, the ACT Government plans to build an express busway that will connect the Belconnen Town centre with the Calvary Hospital, the Canberra Institute of Technology and the city centre.
Lifestyle
Belconnen is a family orientated District, offering predominently family sized houses but with an increasing number of new apartment building to choose from. This area is home to the Belconnen Fresh Food markets which are open Wednesday through to Sunday and provide a smorgasbord of fresh market produce as well as restaurants and cafes, perfect for a catch up with friends after you’ve finished your weekly groceries. For your other shopping needs, Westfield Belconnen is located on Benjamin Way and is one of the largest shopping centres in Canberra with plenty of parking and heaps of variety in both department and specialty stores.
Developments
The Republic project by Geocon is currently under construction in Belconnen and will create a brand new “microchasm of a city” which will form a vibrant new hub. Managing director of Geocon, Nick Georgalis says unlike the CBD, the new town centre “won’t empty at 5pm when the large government departments close”. Republic is the largest mixed development currently underway anywhere in Australia and will consist of new apartment towers, hotel, reinvigorated parkland and live performance theater as well as the first Woolworths Metro supermarket in Canberra.
The four apartments towers within Republic, named High Society towers will bring over 1,200 new apartments to the market. The High Society apartments will also be the tallest residential towers in Canberra on their completion in 2020, sitting at 113 metres tall.
Education
Within the Belconnen area, there are plenty of options for schooling, with 23 preschools, 19 primary schools, 5 high schools and 3 colleges. This area is home to the only Goverment-operated Year 7-12 school in the ACT, Melba Copland Secondary School. Belconnen also has a Government-run special school within the region for children with disabilities. Two of the most popular high schools in the region, Radford College and Canberra High, are well-known for their academic achievement and excellent facilities.
In terms of tertiary education, Belconnen is home to the University of Canberra, located in the suburb of Bruce. This university is a world-ranked institution with over 13,000 students currently. UC offers courses and degrees across 5 faculties: Business, Goverment and Law, Education, Health, Art and Design as well as Science and Technology. For students wanting to stay close to the university, on-campus accommodation is an option. There is also a Canberra Institute of Technology campus which is located in Bruce as well.
