Unlike many other Gold Coast suburbs, there is still plenty of parking available on side streets in Labrador.
Located right on the iconic Broadwater, you’re never too far away from a refreshing dip in the water. Without the waves of other Gold Coast beaches, it’s the perfect area for kids.
Labrador is located within 10 minutes of the Griffith University Gold Coast campus and Gold Coast Private Hospital, and is also less than 10-minutes’ drive from two of the Gold Coast’s best shopping destinations: Harbourtown and Australia Fair.

There is a two-hour parking limit on most of the streets in Labrador as they fall within the Southport Parking Area.
In comparison to other Gold Coast suburbs, there are not many restaurants in Labrador.
After stopping at the university in Southport, the G:Link light rail heads inland towards Parkwood, meaning Labrador residents miss out on the convenience of the light rail system.
Location & Transport
The suburb of Labrador extends along the Broadwater from Harley Park down to Loders Creek, with the inland border stretching from the Harbourtown shopping complex to the north and Southport Sharks Event Centre to the south.
Brisbane’s CBD is around 50 minutes away, and the drive to Surfers Paradise takes approximately 15 minutes. Labrador is often rated one of the best Gold Coast suburbs for families thanks to the close proximity to several shopping centres, the hospital and Griffith University. For those with younger children, Sea World is just over 10 minutes away and local parks are plentiful for free weekend entertainment.
Lifestyle
Labrador is ranked as the 3rd best suburb on the Gold Coast by locals (according to Homely), being beaten out only by Bundall and Broadbeach Waters. The area attracts plenty of families and professionals and the pathways are always full of locals walking, running or cycling. The Broadwater Parklands in Labrador is a popular community and family space, as is the lagoon next to the famous Charis Seafood market. Charis Seafood is located at the northern end of Labrador, and is home of the largest supply of fresh seafood on the Gold Coast, and is always busy.
Although Labrador has had a fair share of bad publicity over the last few years when it comes to crime rates (earning the suburb the moniker of “Lock your door Labrador”), the area does not experience a statistically significant crime increase in comparison to neighbouring suburbs. Of those who live in Labrador, 54% are renting and the average age of residents is between 20 and 39 years old.
Education
Labrador is a great suburb for families due to the education access. In terms of public schooling, Labrador State School is situated just off Imperial Parade in the middle of the suburb. For high school aged students, the catchment school is Southport State High School, with is only eight minutes drive from the northern-most point of Labrador. Southport Special School is also located close by for students who may need extra assistance with their studies. There is also six different early learning and childcare centres in the suburb, so options for working parents are plentiful.
Labrador is also located less than 10-minutes’ drive away from the Griffith University Gold Coast campus, offering a fast array of courses and programs.
Developments
Summit apartments on Frank Street are currently under construction as is Inspire Broadwater Central apartments. Both are due for completion in 2020. Brightwater apartments, Three72 and Coast Broadwater are also located in Labrador and have been completed within the last six months or so. In neighbouring suburbs, East on the Broadwater and Waterpoint Residences currently selling in Biggera Waters and Marine Quarter on the market in Southport.
